Appearance of Glory

The glory of God can be seen only through the blood of Jesus, who died on the cross to take away our sins, so we can SEE the glory and BE in the glory of God forever.

I hope you are expecting God’s glory to touch your life, even THIS WEEKEND!  The glory of God encompasses our DNA on earth through the Holy Spirit and the glory of God will be our richest reward and experience when we reach the final page of the last chapter of our life’s story.  So let’s look at the word glory and the Biblical experience of glory.GLORY!  According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, the word glory is defined as praise, honor, or distinction extended by common consent: renown; worshipful praise, honor, and thanksgiving; giving glory to God.  I think Merriam Webster’s definition matches this usage of glory:

“Give unto the LORD the glory due unto his name: bring an offering, and come before him: worship the LORD in the beauty of holiness (I Chronicles 16:29).”

But that’s Merriam Webster.  What does God say?

I like pictures.  (People actually think in pictures).  So what pictures does the Bible give us of the glory of God?

CLOUD OF GLORY

“And the glory of the LORD abode upon Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days: and the seventh day he called unto Moses out of the midst of the cloud (Exodus 24:16).”

“Then a cloud covered the tent of the congregation, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle (Exodus 40:34).”

“So that the priests could not stand to minister because of the cloud: for the glory of the LORD had filled the house of the LORD (I Kings 8:11).”

FIRE OF GLORY

“And the sight of the glory of the LORD was like devouring fireon the top of the mountain the eyes of the children of Israel (Exodus 24:17).”

“And ye said, Behold, the LORD our God hath shewed us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice out of the midst of the fire: we have seen this day that God doth talk with man, and he liveth (Deuteonomy 5:24).”

GLORY IN THUNDER, LIGHTNING, THICK CLOUD, TRUMPET, SMOKE, FIRE, EARTHQUAKE, VOICE OF GOD

And it came to pass on the third day in the morning, that there were thunders and lightnings, and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of the trumpet exceeding loud; so that all the people that was in the camp trembled. 17And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to meet with God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18And mount Sinai was altogether on a smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in fire: and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mount quaked greatly.

19And when the voice of the trumpet sounded long, and waxed louder and louder, Moses spake, and God answered him by a voice. 20And the LORD came down upon mount Sinai, on the top of the mount: and the LORD called Moses up to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. 21And the LORD said unto Moses, Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the LORD to gaze, and many of them perish.

Wow.  Can you SEE THIS?

And yet when God manifested His glory to Elisha, he did not come in high winds or earthquake or fire.

11And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:  12And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice. 13And it was so, when Elijah heard it, that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him (I Kings 19:11-13).

This is almost confusing.  I mean, glory can look like just a cloud, just fire, a whole pile of shaking and trumpet blast and dark smoke.  Then the glory comes in a still small voice.  Here’s the truth.

God’s glory is all of that.  God manifests himself in all of these ways and each reflection and facet of his glory is magnificent and touches both our hearts and our skin.  He is real.  And he chooses the way in which he comes to us in glory, just as we choose whether we will email, telephone, snail mail, text, or personally call on a friend we care about.  That’s God.  That’s GLORY.

About Lift the Cross of Jesus!

My day job is writing--I'm an author and publisher of a number of books. More on that later. But there is nothing of greater importance to me than the early morning hours I spend with the Creator of the Universe. Although He knows everything there is to know, His greatest delight isn't to give us knowledge, but to give us love. My highest joy is to watch the sun rise with notebook in hand and write the words he speaks to my heart. I want to share some of those words with you here . . . words on the cross.

Hello Hope: Nice writing. You’ve inspired me to post yet another previously written piece that ties in with yours. “In a whisper”. It can be read at my site. Maybe someday I’ll write something new again. I’m still posting stuff I’ve never published from my pile of journals.
