The cross is the hallmark of history. All words written from Genesis to Malachi (the Old Testament in the Bible) pointed the coming Messiah and his outstretched body sacrificed on a cross. Every bloody lamb on a Jewish altar pointed to the coming Lamb of God who would take away the sins of the world. Every feast celebrated the fact that the Deliverer, the Messiah, was coming.
And the Deliverer came! Through a virgin birth the Messiah entered into his own creation, now corrupted by sin! Jesus the Deliverer said, “If I am lifted up (on the cross), I will draw all people to me.” And, “Whoever believes in me will have eternal life.”
This is the gospel. This cross is the power of God brought down to rescue his human family.
And this is the picture that I see coming ahead in the 21st century–multitudes and multitudes of people mingling about, lost and wandering in the Valley of Decision. This valley that I see in my mind’s eye (and drew quite clumsily in the picture you see here) stretches out much like the Grand Canyon, then empties into a meadow.
On the sides of the ravine I see Christians who are holding up crosses, calling to the people below, “This is the answer! Look up here! This is what you need!”
In the valley I see three people:
1. A business woman in a dress suit is clicking away at her cell phone. She hears someone shouting in the distance, “Look up here! Here’s the answer! Hey, look up here!” She glances up to see what all the commotion is about, sees the cross, but quickly returns to her work, her thumbs moving furiously over her phone.
2. A man in his 40’s, red-faced, angry, fist raised at the Christians on the side of the ravine. He shouts obscenities and shakes his fist against God, His cross, and His Christians.
3. A young man who is 20-something, stands beside his girlfriend. He hears someone shout in the distance, “Look up here! Here’s the answer! This is what you’re looking for!” The young man fixes his attention on the cross lifted high on the side of the valley. He looks at his girlfriend and says, “That’s it! That’s what we’re looking for!” He takes her hand and leads her through the crowd and makes his way up the side of the ravine . . . to the cross.
“Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision (Joel 3:13 NASV).”
Andrew Murray once said, “Turn away from the visible if you want to possess the invisible.”
I wonder if Andrew Murray could see the multitudes that will come to Christ in the last days? Joel saw them–multitudes of people in the Valley of Decision in the last days. He wrote about it in his book.
“Put in the sickle, for the harvest is ripe.
Come, tread, for the wine press is full;
The vats overflow, for their wickedness is great.
Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision!
For the day of the Lord is near in the valley of decision (Joel 3:13, 14 NASV).”
Right now that Valley of Decision may seem invisible. But very soon we will see that valley, a vast ravine full of people who did not yet decide for Christ. Some of those in the valley will be too busy or too angry to pay attention to the gospel. But others are READY to come to the cross.
Are you one of many who are in the Valley of Decision? I want to encourage you to come to the cross, talk to the one who can erase your guilt and create a new future for you, a life that is free from sin and fear and shame. (Click here to find out more).
Are you one of many who are called to carry the cross and lift it high? Can you see people who need Jesus today in the Valley of Decision? Jesus said that when his cross is lifted from the earth, he will draw people to himself.
“This gospel of the kingdom shall be preached in the whole world as a testimony to all the nations, and then the end will come (Matthew 24:14).”
Jesus said, “The one who does not take his cross and follow after Me is not worthy of Me (Matthew 10:38).”
If you are a Christian, then I want you to know that God has given us all we need to be prepared for what is coming in the last days. In fact, we will not only be prepared to protect ourselves, we will be equipped to overcome that great dragon, the devil, and all of his wicked schemes.
